Goulburn cosplay enthusiast, Jasmin Jesenkovic, was always a creative child.

“I had a fascination with being a different character,” Ms Jesenkovic fondly recalled.

“I would always dress up.”

Learning how to sew in high school, she stumbled into university with a new found passion and drive, idiolising strong and quirky female characters across the pop culture scene.

“It’s a culture where the people put themselves into it,” she said.

“When people wear their costume it’s an armour. Introverts become extroverts. No one shuns you.”

Rarely buying the pre-made costumes, Ms Jesenkovic often takes pride in sewing her dresses and making her shoes, adding a personal touch to every garment she makes.

“Normally, I’m a bit more shy and reserved but when I put on Harley Quinn’s costume on, I’m bubbly, bright and change my voice. You open yourself up and you meet people.”

Ms Jesenkovic actively promotes positive body image in the cosplay scene, especially amongst teenage girls who plan to participate.

“It doesn’t matter your size or shape you are, anyone can wear a costume so long as you feel comfortable,” she said.

“If you’re a blonde and you know Wonder Woman has dark hair, you can be that. You can be Tiana the frog princess if you’re Caucasian. You can be Elsa even if you have slightly dark skin. If you relate to that character, do it – there’s nothing really stopping you but yourself.”

She encourages attendees of every shape, size, colour and age to get involved in this year’s Comic Con events in Goulburn.

“We’re trying to grow the cosplay community in the region, it is a lot bigger in Canberra. We would love to see more people involved,” she said.

Goulburn Comic Con will be held at the Veolia Arena on March 18 between 11am and 5pm. It is organised by the Goulburn Mulwaree Library.

Hi Readers

It’s time for another cosplay interview, this time we meet Princess Jazz Cosplay! Princess Jazz Cosplay is our first cosplayer featured from sunny Australia. Let’s find out some more about Princess Jazz Cosplay.

1) How did you get into cosplaying?

I kind of fell into cosplaying. I’ve studied textiles and dressmaking previously. When I went to uni for my nursing/paramedics degree they had a Heroes and Villains night and for the hell of it, I made Jill Valentine (STARS) from Resident Evil for it. Made everything, (even the gun). A couple of weeks later was a major Convention in Australia so I decided to go with a girlfriend wearing the same costumes we had made for the party.

2) Where do you get your inspiration and ideas to cosplay from? Is it from programs you watch now or childhood programs or both?

Primarily comics. I’m a giant geek, and I love DC more than anything (except maybe Star Trek) so a lot of the cosplays I want to do come from the pages of DC’s library.

3) How do you put your outfits together are they 100% from scratch and if so what’s been your trickiest part to date?

Honestly, not enough time. I have a bad habit of making my costumes days (and in some cases hours) before an event. My workload doesn’t give me a lot of free time, and when it does, I tend to play videogames instead of sew. So simply putting them together before I’m supposed to leave is the trickiest part.

4) What’s your favourite cosplay to date?

My DC Arkham Knight Harley Quinn. It was probably the most popular costume I’ve done so far, and its most definitely the one I’ve had the most photos of. It gets a lot of attention and I love being silly for a few hours.

5) If you’ve cosplayed at a convention what was the experience like?

A little overwhelming at times, but you quickly realise that you’re a part of a giant community and then it becomes awesome. (it doesn’t help to have a fiancé who knows practically everyone).

6) Can we expect to see you at any conventions this year?

OZ Comic-Con Sydney and Gamma.Con in Canberra are confirmed at the moment. Due to my workload, I can’t commit to cons that far in advance.

7) If you could cosplay as anyone and budget wasn’t an issue who would it be?

Its not so much time or money but confidence, but I’ve always wanted to do my namesake Princess Jasmine, or Slave Leia, but not quite there yet to do them.

8) Do you have any words of advice for up and coming cosplayers?

Just do it, you aren’t alone, we are all one big community, and you will find people who have the same interests as you. Likes don’t mean anything, it all depends on how much fun YOU have.

9) Where can we find you online?

About PrincessJazz Cosplay

Name: PrincessJazz Cosplay
Age: 25
Location: Canberra, Australia
Occupation: Registered Nurse
I’ve been Cosplaying for six years, and re-enacting for three. I feel they both challenge me in different ways both artistically and creatively.

Aside from costuming, I enjoy baking (especially historical baking), playing videogames and reading trashy romance novels

How did you first get into cosplay?

I kind of fell into cosplaying. I’ve studied textiles and dressmaking previously. When I went to uni for my nursing/paramedics degree they had a Heroes and Villains night and for the hell of it, I made Jill Valentine (STARS) from Resident Evil for it. made everything, (even the gun). a couple of weeks later was a major Convention in Australia so I decided to go with a girlfriend wearing the same costumes we had made for the party.

How much time do you spend making your costumes?

Honestly, not enough time. I have a bad habit of making my costumes days (and in some cases hours) before an event. My workload doesn’t give me a lot of free time, and when it does, I tend to play videogames instead of sew.

You could say that I love working to a deadline by panicking hours before its due.

What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far?

My DC Arkham Knight Harley Quinn. It was probably the most popular costume I’ve done so far, and its most definitely the one I’ve had the most photos of. It gets a lot of attention and I love being silly for a few hours.

Do you usually get positive reactions from fans?

Most of the time but there are a few troublemakers out there who hide behind their keyboards.

What’s the next costume or event you’re preparing for?

Wonder Woman from Batman Vs Superman and a Star Trek Bunnysuit.

What characters inspire you the most?

Wonder Woman and Harley.

Wonder Woman because she’s strong, independent, and stands up for own ideals, she essentially doesn’t need no man to tell her that she’s the toughest badass this side of Amazonia.

Harley Quinn: because she’s that little bit off kilter, she has fun but also has a human side to run counterpoint to the crazy.

What is your primary area of inspiration for your cosplay?  Comics, anime, games or other?

Primarily comics. I’m a giant geek, and I love DC more than anything (except maybe Star Trek) so a lot of the cosplays i want to do come from the pages of DC’s library.

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

Remnant Warehouse online for my fabric and Sarlacc Pit for worbla etc. Where I live, I don’t have access to a lot of places to get materials, so I have to source everything online, which can extend already razor-thin deadlines.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give new cosplayers?

Start small, start comfortable and don’t be afraid to ask others for help, cause we all started somewhere.

What’s your golden rule of cosplay?

Be whoever you want, and don’t let others stop you doing that.

What does your budget run per costume?

$200-500, almost everything that I make is fabric based, so I’ve been lucky to not have to spend much. But on the flipside, I do buy a LOT more than I usually need.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Body-shaming and people being negative for no reason other than to make themselves feel better.
I’m a curvy-cosplayer, while it doesn’t happen to me, I’ve seen trolls go after girls like me for not being thin enough to cosplay. I’ve seen great women give up this hobby simply because there is a section of the internet that can’t accept that a woman can have curves.

If money and time were no issue, what’s your number one over ambitious cosplay?

Its not so much time or money but confidence, but I’ve always wanted to do my namesake Princess Jasmine, or Slave Leia, but not quite there yet to do them.

Why do you cosplay?

My time is spent between re-enacting and costuming. For my Re-enacting I feel like I’m embodying a historical aspect and bringing a piece of history to others, whereas my cosplay is for fun, I use it as a creative outlet from my job and life.
